I’ve been making shampoo bars for over a decade, and I’ll tell you something most brands won’t: if you see “Certified Organic” on a shampoo bar, either the chemistry is wrong or the hair is paying the price.

Let me explain why this certification is almost impossible to achieve honestly for a real shampoo bar-and why the few that do make it often leave your hair worse off than before.

The Surfactant Wall

A proper shampoo bar relies on synthetic surfactants like SCI or SCS. These are the only ingredients that give you a stable, pH-balanced lather that works in hard water and doesn’t strip your scalp.

Here’s the catch: No major certifying body (USDA Organic, COSMOS, ECOCERT) considers these surfactants “organic.” Even if the coconut oil used to make them was grown organically, the chemical processing-sulfation, isethionic acid reactions-disqualifies them. Period.

So when a brand slaps “Organic” on a bar with SCI as the main ingredient, they’re not being honest. They’re using a tiny amount of organic oils in the formula to claim the whole bar is organic. It’s a classic greenwashing trick.

The Soap Loophole (and the Damage It Does)

The only easy way to get a shampoo bar certified organic is to make it 100% soap-saponified oils with lye. Soap is easy to certify because the raw oils (coconut, olive) can be organic. But here’s the problem:

  • pH disaster: Soap bars have a pH of 9-10. Your hair and scalp are naturally around 4.5-5.5. That’s like washing your hair with alkaline water-it opens the cuticle, leaves hair rough, and strips natural oils.
  • Soap scum: In hard water, soap reacts with calcium to form a waxy film. This dulls hair, makes it feel heavy, and creates buildup that’s hard to remove.

Many “organic” shampoo bars are just rebranded soap bars. They destroy hair health. The manufacturer knows this, but the organic label sells better than a bar that actually works. If you’ve ever tried an organic bar and felt your hair was heavy and waxy afterward, this is why.

The Formulation Nightmare

Let’s say you want to make a world-class shampoo bar using surfactants but still get some organic ingredients in there. You add organic aloe vera, organic shea butter, and organic essential oils. Suddenly you hit a wall:

  1. Preservation: Organic-approved preservatives are weak. Your bar either grows mold or dries out and crumbles before it reaches the customer.
  2. pH balancing: To lower pH to 5.5, you need citric or lactic acid. Organic citric acid exists, but the extraction process often disqualifies it. Many brands skip pH adjustment entirely-or cheat.
  3. Water activity: Organic liquids raise water activity, inviting bacteria. You have to over-dry the bar, making it brittle and short-lived.

The result is a product that sounds great on paper but fails in the shower. The manufacturer knows this, but the label is what sells.

The Packaging Irony

Here’s another dirty secret: organic-certified shampoo bars are often wrapped in plastic-lined kraft paper or PLA (corn plastic) to look green. These materials absorb moisture from the bar-especially if it’s a glycerin-rich soap bar-causing swelling, cracking, and an unusable product before it even lands in your bathroom.

The best packaging for a shampoo bar is a simple cardboard box or no wrapper at all. But that doesn’t say “organic” to the customer, so brands choose terrible packaging just to keep the label.

What Honest Manufacturers Should Do

Stop chasing a certification that doesn’t fit the chemistry. Here’s the smarter path:

  • If you make a syndet bar: Accept you will never be “Certified Organic.” Instead, list your organic ingredients honestly-like “Made with organic shea butter” or “Organic essential oils.” Use NSF/ANSI 305 if you need a standard.
  • If you make a soap bar: Don’t call it shampoo. Call it soap. It’s honest, and your customers’ hair will be healthier for it.

The best claim for a real shampoo bar isn’t “organic.” It’s “pH-balanced, biodegradable, cruelty-free, and honestly labelled.”

That’s the expertise your customers deserve-not a green logo that hides bad chemistry.
