Why Many Shampoo Bars Are “Preservative-Free”
True cold-process and hot-process shampoo bars are typically anhydrous (no water added) and made with sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide, which creates a high-pH environment hostile to microbes. In these bars, the only “preservation” needed is an antioxidant like vitamin E or rosemary extract to prevent oil rancidity. If you see a shampoo bar that contains water-such as a “syndet” bar (synthetic detergent) or a “cream” bar-the manufacturer must include a skin-safe preservative.
